On June 11, 2025, with the support of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan (CEP) and in cooperation with the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke), a final seminar was held to review the achievements of the project “Development of Surface Water Monitoring in Tajikistan through Quality Management and Cooperation”, to discuss key findings, and to explore opportunities for collaboration among participants and stakeholders in this field.

The event was attended by representatives of relevant ministries and agencies, development partners, and civil society organizations involved in the development of the water and environmental sectors in Tajikistan.

In his opening remarks, the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Isfandiyor Shukurzoda, noted that the project aims to strengthen the capacity of laboratories in the fields of environmental management, monitoring, and assessment of surface water quality. This contributes to achieving the goals of the National Water Strategy of the Republic of Tajikistan until 2040, as well as promoting sectoral strategies and programs.

It was highlighted that, within the framework of the project, two central laboratories under the Committee for Environmental Protection were equipped with the necessary instruments and tools. These include the Laboratory of the Analytical Control and Analysis Center, which monitors the quality and impact of industrial and municipal wastewater, and the Surface Water Laboratory of the Hydrometeorology Agency, which monitors the quality of national and transboundary surface waters.

Deputy Director of the Hydrometeorology Agency under the Committee for Environmental Protection, Ms. Jamilya Baydulloyeva, and the Finnish Ambassador-at-Large, Mr. Ilkka Räisänen, also expressed their satisfaction with the development of bilateral cooperation in their speeches.

During the thematic sessions following the presentation of the project results, specialists from relevant ministries and agencies presented their proposals and requests concerning the prospects for the development of surface water quality monitoring and for accelerating the implementation of the tasks of the National Agency for Water Resources and Environmental Protection in Tajikistan. The seminar also addressed the issue of public and stakeholder access to water quality information.
