Dushanbe Concludes the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation
Dushanbe, May 31, 2025 – Today, the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation concluded in Dushanbe with a final press conference. The event brought together the Prime Minister of the Republic of Tajikistan, Mr. Qohir Rasulzoda, the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Ms. Celeste Saulo, and representatives from over 90 countries around the world.
In his closing remarks, the Prime Minister emphasized that the conference served as a platform for constructive dialogue, the exchange of best practices, and scientific knowledge in addressing one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time — the rapid melting of glaciers. He underlined the critical role glaciers play in maintaining ecological balance, supporting socio-economic development, and ensuring water security.
The protection of glaciers is vital for sustaining livelihoods, reducing climate-related risks, and achieving the goals of sustainable development, especially in vulnerable regions.
The Conference agenda included two plenary sessions, 12 thematic panels, two high-level roundtables, and more than 25 side events. Over 2,600 participants took part, reaffirming Dushanbe’s significance as an international platform for dialogue on cryosphere and glacier-related issues.
As a result of the Conference, the Dushanbe Declaration and the “Dushanbe Appeal: Call for Actions” were adopted. These important documents call upon UN member states and stakeholders to enhance international cooperation and coordination of the global agenda on the protection of the cryosphere and glaciers.
WMO Secretary-General Ms. Celeste Saulo highlighted the significance of the Conference, describing it as a meaningful step toward strengthening cooperation on water and climate issues, and contributing to the preparation for the 2026 UN Water Conference.
The Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan views the hosting of such events as a vital step in unifying international efforts to safeguard the environment and natural resources and expresses its readiness to implement the outcomes of the Conference.
