Strengthening International Cooperation in Environmental Protection
On 30–31 May 2025, within the framework of the High-Level International Conference on Glacier Preservation held in Dushanbe, the Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sheralizoda Bahodur Ahmadjon, held a series of bilateral meetings with senior representatives of international organizations and partner countries. The discussions focused on key issues related to environmental protection, climate change, and sustainable management of natural resources.
In a meeting with Dr. Musomba Mumba, Secretary of the UN Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, the parties emphasized the importance of protecting wetland ecosystems and discussed the impacts of glacier melt on biodiversity and freshwater access under climate change conditions. Dr. Mumba expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality and the well-organized conference, praising Tajikistan's leadership in global environmental matters.
During talks with Ivana Živković, Director of UNDP for Europe and Central Asia, the sides exchanged views on climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, renewable energy development, and sustainable water resource management. Ms. Živković commended Tajikistan’s leadership in glacier preservation and stressed the need for deeper partnerships based on scientific evidence.
With Arnold Kreilhuber, Director of the UNEP Regional Office for Europe, discussions included implementation of major environmental projects such as the disposal of hazardous waste, Tajikistan’s engagement in UN environmental structures, and follow-up on UNEA 7 resolutions. A particular focus was given to coordinated efforts for glacier monitoring and protection as glaciers remain a vital source of freshwater in the context of global warming.
In the meeting with Alexander Kozlov, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, both sides discussed joint scientific research on climate change impacts on glaciers. Russia proposed the involvement of Tajik experts in Antarctic expeditions. Discussions also covered the development of protected natural areas and expert knowledge exchange.
These high-level meetings significantly contributed to strengthening international collaboration in addressing environmental challenges, climate adaptation, and sustainable natural resource management. Tajikistan, as a global advocate for glacier protection, continues to make a meaningful contribution to resolving pressing environmental issues.
