Meeting on National Biodiversity Goals Review
A multilateral seminar on the review of national biodiversity goals, updated in accordance with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, was held in the city of Dushanbe.
This initiative aims to accelerate and support the actions of governments of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity in updating national biodiversity strategies and action plans in line with their commitments.
The seminar was attended by the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Isfandiyor Shukurzoda, the Head of the National Center for Biodiversity and Biosafety of the Committee, Olimjon Yatimov, representatives of UNDP in Tajikistan, an international biodiversity consultant, as well as heads, deputies, and experts from relevant departments and divisions of various state agencies. Additionally, scientists and representatives of environmental organizations, including regional ones, actively participated in the review and discussion of the updated goals.
The seminar facilitated discussions and refinements of the national biodiversity conservation goals, considering current social and economic contexts, as well as identifying potential funding sources for their implementation.
During his speech, I. Shukurzoda emphasized the high importance of the ongoing project for the country, particularly in the context of its commitment to preserving natural wealth, especially biodiversity. In this regard, he highlighted the long-standing and multifaceted cooperation with UNDP on key environmental initiatives, particularly those aimed at preserving valuable ecosystems, species, and genetic diversity.
UNDP in Tajikistan serves as the direct implementer of this global project and, in close collaboration with the National Center for Biodiversity and Biosafety of the CEP RT, organizes expert work, inter-agency consultations, and support for the global technical team to ensure that the target objectives align with the principles of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and national priorities.
This approach enabled representatives of relevant government agencies, scientists, and environmentalists to participate in shaping the updated biodiversity goals, which will form the foundation of the future new biodiversity strategy and action plan.
