Meeting of Bakhodur Sheralizoda and Dr. Gretel Aguilar on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku
On November 18, within the framework of the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which is taking place in Baku, a meeting was held between the Chairpersons of the Committee on Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan Bakhodur Sheralizoda and Dr. Gretel Aguilar, Director General of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
During the meeting, Dr. Aguilar expressed gratitude to Tajikistan for joining IUCN as an official member, emphasizing the importance of this step for strengthening global cooperation in the field of nature conservation. She also noted that she was glad to learn about the relevant Decree of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, which was signed on November 16, 2024, confirming the country's desire to actively participate in international efforts to conserve nature and sustainable development.
The parties discussed a wide range of issues related to environmental protection and sustainable development. One of the key points of discussion was the cooperation between Tajikistan and IUCN in preparation for the International High-Level Conference on Glacier Conservation, scheduled for May 2025 in accordance with the UNGA Resolution declaring 2025 the International Year of Glacier Conservation. This important event is expected to bring together leading experts and participants from around the world to discuss current issues of glacier conservation and climate change.
Bahodur Sheralizoda and Gretel Aguilar emphasized the need to further strengthen the interaction between Tajikistan and IUCN, as well as joint preparations for the upcoming conference, which will become an important platform for exchanging experiences and developing strategies for ecosystem conservation, especially in the context of global climate change.
This meeting on the sidelines of COP29 highlights Tajikistan's growing influence in international initiatives to protect the environment and strengthen global cooperation in addressing climate change.
