On December 17, a workshop was held to discuss the updated law “On safe activities related to genetically modified organisms”. The meeting was attended by deputies of the Committee on Agrarian Affairs, Land and Water Resources of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan, heads and specialists of the responsible government departments, scientists and experts of the research institutions.

Law “On biological safety” was adopted in 2005 as part of the country’s obligations to implement the provisions of the Cartagena Protocol to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which was ratified by Tajikistan in 2004. All activities related to the use of GMOs in closed systems, their release into the environment, their placement on the market, as well as imports and exports, fall within the scope of the law.

This law together with regulations and provisions of the legal norms of other laws form the basis of the regulatory framework for the emerging national biosafety system, the task of which is to realize the rights of the citizens of Tajikistan to life, health protection and biodiversity conservation.

In order to harmonize the name of the law with its key provisions and the scope of its activities it was decided to make changes and amendments, including the content, also taking into account new developments and trends in the field of biotechnology.

At the initiative of the National Biodiversity and Biosafety Centre of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan a series of workshops and consultative meetings were organized with the relevant departments, research institutions and public environmental organizations to discuss the current changes and amendments in the context of the law, including use of the special terms. The updated law was submitted by the Committee on Agrarian Affairs, Land and Water Resources of the Majlisi Namoyandagon Majlisi Oli of the Republic of Tajikistan.

At the last workshop a final version of the law was presented, including a part of amendments voiced during the joint meetings. The name of the law was mainly changed, in the final version it sounds like Law “On safe activities related to genetically modified organisms”.
