Water for sustainable development: management and coordination

On June 23, 2022, within the framework of the project of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and UNDP “An integrated landscape approach to enhancing the climate resilience of small-scale farmers and pastoralists in Tajikistan”, a round table was held in  Dushanbe on the topic “Reform of the water sector of the Republic Tajikistan and Water Resources Management in the Kafirnigan River Basin”, which was attended by representatives of ministries, scientific and higher educational institutions of the Republic of Tajikistan, local authorities, and international organizations.

The Project Mr. Nemonov Giyosiddin in his speech spoke about the goals and objectives of the round table and the Project.

Integrated water resources management, including in the context of the relationship of water with issues of energy, food security, and environmental protection, is one of the main tools for addressing existing problems in the face of climate change and is extremely important for Tajikistan, in particular for the implementation of the Water Reform in Republic and Tajikistan.

In the framework of this program, national experts spoke on the purpose, goals and principles, plan of actions, financing and appointment of the special authorized state body for regulation and use of water.

The round table discussed issues of water sector reform in the Republic of Tajikistan and analysis of the situation in the Kafirnigan river basin, development and implementation of a water action plan as a mechanism for watershed management in the Kafirnigan river basin, as well as experience, problems and activities of water user associations and other basin organizations in local water management.

Each participant of the round table talked not only about the achievements of their organization, but, importantly, shared the best practices and knowledge’s.

The Adaptation Fund project, implemented in our country under the leadership of the Committee for Environmental Protection, aims to develop and implement an integrated approach to landscape management to develop the resilience of local communities in Tajikistan to climate change in one of the most climate-sensitive river basins, namely the river Kafirnigan.
