Meeting of the CEP Chairman with the Executive Director and Chairman of the Global Environment Facility (GEF)
On March 4 of this year, in the city of Nairobi, on the sidelines of the Special Session of the Assembly of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP@50, dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the founding of the organization), a meeting was held between the Chairman of the Committee on Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, Sheralizod Bahodur Ahmadjon, with the Executive Director and Chairman of the Global Environment Facility, Mr. Carlos Manuel Rodriguez.
The Chairman of the Committee discussed with Mr. Rodiriguez the current activities of the GEF in Tajikistan, the main areas of cooperation in the field of environment, ecology, protected natural areas, etc. Particular attention was paid to the direction of transition to "green" energy. The Chairman of the Committee informed Mr. Rodigez that more than 96% of energy in Tajikistan is generated from environmentally friendly and renewable energy sources, and that more than 9 million trees have been planted in Tajikistan over the past 5 years, which increases the potential of our country for absorption of carbon.
The parties also discussed the issues of increasing GEF funding in Tajikistan in accordance with national priorities and enhancing interaction between the parties to solve environmental problems in Tajikistan.
At the end of the meeting, the Chairman of the Committee invited Mr. Rodriguez to visit Tajikistan as part of the planned regional events in 2022.
