Participation of the Chairman of the Committee in the event "Snow and ice in the context of climate change" in the framework of the 26th session of the Conference of the Parties

Within the framework of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26), on November 1, 2021, a side event was held on Snow and Ice in the Context of Climate Change: How to Build Resilience to the Aggravating Effects of Natural Disasters and Climate Change, accessibility of water ”, in which the chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan Sheralizoda BA made a welcoming speech.

This event was organized by the Republic of Tajikistan, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and UNESCO. The event examined the relationship between climate change, the cryosphere and human dependence on water, as well as the impact of climate change on water resources, including through glacier melting.

In addition to the Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Peteri Taalas, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Ms. Shamila Nair-Beidulla, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO, Sulton Rahimzoda, Chairman of the IFAS Executive Committee, spoke at the opening ceremony of this side event.

The panel discussion was attended by representatives of international and regional organizations, as well as stakeholders from the environmental, water, energy and agriculture sectors.

A special focus within the framework of this side event was directed to the new initiative of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan, esteemed Emomali Rahmon, to declare 2025 the International Year for the Preservation of Glaciers, which was widely supported by the participants.
