Informational workshop on the Threat of old pesticides in the Republic of Tajikistan

            

On November 8 of this year, at the initiative of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan and with the support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), together with the Public Association "Peshsaf" and with the participation of representatives of relevant government agencies, an informative workshop on the topic "Overview of the threat of old pesticides in the Republic" was held at the Serena Hotel in Dushanbe Tajikistan".

The event began with an introductory speech by the First Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan Qiyomzoda Zarafo Sufijon and the Coordinator of the Regional Program on Natural Resources, Biodiversity, Sustainable Development of the Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, Ms. Tania Santivanez.

First Deputy Chairman of the Committee Qiyomzoda Z. S. during her speech noted that in modern conditions the issue of obsolete pesticides and pesticides is very important and relevant, she expressed the hope that appropriate decisions will be taken by the responsible authorities on the recommendation of this information workshop.

Coordinator of the Regional Program on Natural Resources, Biodiversity, Sustainable Development, Ms. Tania Santivanez provided background information on the work of FAO "Pesticide management and environmental sustainability in Europe and Central Asia, pesticide lifecycle management and destruction of pesticides, environmentally sustainable organic pollutants in Central Asia and Turkey".

Abdusalim Juraev, Director of the State Institution “National Center for the Implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Organic Pollutants”, made a report on the state of the republican program for the management of obsolete pesticides in Tajikistan and the history of the use and destruction of dichloro-diphenyl-trichloromethylmethane. Other experts also made presentations at the workshop on the topic “The harm of obsolete pesticides on public health and biological substitutes for pesticides”, “The importance of informing about the dangers of pesticides” and “Inventory and cleaning of mini-landfills in Tajikistan - problems and achievements".

Taking into account the opinions of the participants on the topics discussed, it was decided to hold another such meeting before the end of this year with the participation of responsible persons.
