December 11-international mountain day
The independent Republic of Tajikistan is known throughout the world as a mountainous country. Every Tajik knows and is proud of the fact that 93% of the country's territory is mountainous.
Nature lovers annually celebrate December 11 as International Mountain Day in accordance with the 57th UN General Assembly resolution to highlight the importance of sustainable mountain development. With 27 percent of the planet's land mass being mountains and almost 15 percent of the world's population living in mountainous areas, the United Nations says Mountain Day aims to promote sustainable development in the region.
In our country, there are the highest mountain ranges in the world - the Pamir, Tien Shan and Alai. The most valuable natural wealth of the White Mountains is clean water, and about 1000 rivers with a length of more than 10 kilometers, 60% of the water in Central Asia comes from the mountains of Tajikistan.
All elements of Mendeleev's periodic table have been found in Tajikistan, especially in mountainous regions where endless treasures lie.
In recent years, the intensive development of the foothills has an impact on the life of animals. Some species of animals left their habitats under the influence of anthropogenic factors and settled in other places. This situation has led to a significant reduction in their numbers and even to the risk of extinction.
In this regard, respect for the mountainous soil of Tajikistan, non-pollution of the unique nature with waste, rational use of natural resources and inheritance of the diversity of flora and fauna is the civic duty of every patriotic person.
